From Mazir to Gomel through the radioactive affected areas

After a long sleep after the exhausting driving session yesterday I started late this morning with a drive down the Prypiat  towards Naroulia about 30 km south of Mazir a town that lies 70 km away from Tschernobyl and which was radioaktive polluted - I have to say not a comfortable feeling being there - people are back to town but since you do not see, smell of feel radioactivity it is a strange feeling - all seems to be as normal but is it really like this - what is the radiation level now ....
In the centre of the town a memorial remembers the catastrophe in 1986 - with the children's playground right beside it ....

The only renovated part of the former Horvas Manor is the pavilion overlooking the Prypiat....

The building itself needs some more attention

All looks normal on the local children playground,  but...

When you drive outside town these signs are on the roads leading to the forest - I wonder if the radioactivity knows where to be and where not, since I have seen forestry works ongoing I wonder where the harvested wood ends up - or I may not want to know....

Interesting animals are living in this area

I like the car tire swans

However also these animals look at nasty signs in the background and the people in the house behind too

The stork doesn't care and raises his youngsters

I left the area and turned toward Juravicy where still an old Jesuit monastary can be found dating from 1673 - it is still an impressive setting but needs some make- up to look shining again

On the way towards Gomel I passed a small village with three ladies on the side of the road pointing upwards with their finger -  why not give them a lift I thought - they jumped into the back of my car and while I was preparing my phrase that I only speak a bit Russian and was thinking heavily about how to ask where to drop them off my iPad navigation said in German "turn in 500 m" - then one of the ladies said in perfekt German that they want to go to the next city and that they ar German teachers returning from work - we had a good chat and I dropped them off in the next village - nice road story ...

Recya is a town overlooking the Dnepr - nothing special but a nice setting as these two guys on the bike enjoy too

The main attraction is the Euphrosyne Pollak monument from 1995 - this is where the reliquary elements of the bellarusian national hero made a stop on the way from Kiev to Polack

Finally I found my hotel in Gomel in the evening - by the way I like these zebra crossings - made for humans (not straight on the corners of a street) but where the real walking routes run through the city

The main strewing Gomel, the vul. Saveckaja is lind up with classical houses and a nice place to stroll around

The Rivera on the Dnepr

The first man in Gomel - he apparently cam here fishing and like it - so he decided to stay - well now there are 499 999 other people that think this city is great and do the same ....

The mausoleum of the Paskevic in the castles gardens

The palace in the nice garden settings

Now relaxing enjoying a nice dinner and a beer looking forward to explore mo tomorrow
