Brest is located right at the polish boarder in the south- west of the country and has about 300 000 inhabitants - it is a quite relaxed city but was heavily destroyed and therefore has not many old buildings - main buildings date from the Soviet area - like Hotel Bug I was staying in built in 1958 and has still kept the Soviet Charme as you can see below in the lobby pictures
As time would have not changed a bit
I started early in the morning to catch the morning light also it was a short night since I met two Italians and we went out a bit - met an owner of an Belarus Pizza Bar that was Italian too and... you know ... things get going and time flies ... smile
But it was a pleasant walk to the main attraction of town the Brest Fortress or what it has become...
In the park of the first may
Location is close to the river and therefore has the advantage of water filled ditches and a good defesability. The construction began in 1838 but only one piece of architecture is standing from this time and that is the freshly renovated church. The fortress has a long history but got its heroic touch when it was defence against the German troops by 8000 people who eventually lost and all were killed. Only in 1955 it was decided to put this memory into an heroic setting the monument was created .... no matter what you think about socialist propaganda and glorification this place leaves you not untouched and all is made to let you dive in - the fighting sounds and the announcement that facist Germany has attracted the Sowiet Union the views that are guided on the most important points and the heroic music at the tall sword raising into the sky as well as the hughe face titled "courage" - scroll through the pictures to get your own impression....
The Kholmsky Gate where the scares from the battle can still be seen - the only gate remaining
Even human beings can get close to the body language of the monument
The bare inside of the Byzantine Church of St. Nikolai
After so much patriotism where do big and small boys got, right to the railway museum - it was too tempting to get some good shots of these old engines in the bright sun
Safer ride with Lenin
Bach to the city centre at the local theatr
Mr. Lenin is helpful pointing out the pedestrian crossing
The Brest railway station
The rest of the day I spend reading in the charming Sovyetskaya street with the rest of Brest on this sunny afternoon
the millennium sculpture
And finally cake and espresso in the sunshine - what else ...
